Hey there, neighbors! It’s Rodney A. Cook here.
Can you believe it’s already April 6th? Spring is finally starting to show its face here in Ohio, the birds are chirping, and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably spending a lot more time cleaning muddy paw prints off the kitchen floor.
I wanted to take a second to talk about something near and dear to my heart: and I’m betting yours, too. We’ve got a big day coming up on April 26th: National Pet Parents Day.
Now, I know what some of you might be thinking. "Rodney, another holiday? I just got through Easter!" But here’s the thing: if you’ve ever come home after a long, stressful day at the office and had a golden retriever wiggle its entire body because it's so happy to see you, or had a cat decide that your lap is the only acceptable place to nap, you know that pets aren't just "animals." They are family. Plain and simple.
At Cook Insurance Group, we talk a lot about protecting families. Usually, people think that means life insurance, home insurance, or making sure the minivan is covered. But a family isn't complete without its furry, feathered, or scaled members. That’s why I’m so excited to dive into why we do what we do for our four-legged friends.
Why We Celebrate Pet Parents
National Pet Parents Day wasn’t just cooked up by a greeting card company. It was actually started back in 2007 by Veterinary Pet Insurance to honor the unique bond between humans and their pets. It’s a day to recognize the people who go the extra mile: the ones who wake up at 6:00 AM on a Saturday for a walk, the ones who know exactly which brand of grain-free kibble their picky eater requires, and the ones who consider "dog hair" a standard fashion accessory.
In the U.S., about 67% of households have at least one pet. That is a lot of love (and a lot of chew toys). Here in Ohio, we take our pet parenting seriously. Whether you're taking your pup down to the local park or just snuggling up on the couch during a rainy afternoon, that bond is something special. It’s unconditional love, and in my book, that’s worth protecting.

The "Family First" Approach to Insurance
When I started Cook Insurance Group, I wanted to build something that felt personal. I didn’t want to be just another suit behind a desk talking about premiums and deductibles in a language nobody understands. I wanted to treat my clients like neighbors.
Part of that personal touch is recognizing that your needs change. Your "family" evolves. Maybe you started with a bachelor pad and a mountain bike, and now you’ve got a house, a spouse, two kids, and a chaotic labradoodle named Buster.
If we’re going to protect your world, we have to protect all of it.
I’ve seen it happen too many times: a family is humming along, everything is fine, and then suddenly, the cat swallows a piece of string or the dog jumps a fence and tweaks a hip. Veterinary medicine has come a long way: we can do amazing things for animals now: but man, it can get expensive fast.
That’s where we come in. We offer pet insurance because we don’t want you to ever have to choose between your bank account and your best friend.
What Does Pet Insurance Actually Do?
I like to keep things simple. Pet insurance is basically health insurance for your dog or cat. Just like your own insurance, it’s there to help pick up the tab when the unexpected happens.
Most people don’t realize that one in three pets will need emergency veterinary treatment every year. Those "surprises" can range from a few hundred dollars for an ear infection to several thousand for surgery or chronic illness treatments.
Here’s a quick look at what we can help you cover:
- Accidents: Broken bones, bite wounds, or swallowing things they shouldn't (we're looking at you, Labradors).
- Illnesses: Everything from minor upset stomachs to major things like cancer or diabetes.
- Hereditary Conditions: Some breeds are prone to specific issues, and we can help manage those long-term costs.
- Diagnostic Tests: X-rays, blood work, and MRIs.
- Procedures: Surgeries and hospital stays.
The goal is peace of mind. When you’re at the vet and the doctor is explaining a treatment plan, I want you to be able to focus on "How do we get my pet better?" instead of "How am I going to pay for this?"
Being a Pet Parent in the Buckeye State
We Ohioans love our pets. From the hiking trails at Hocking Hills to the dog-friendly patios in our local neighborhoods, our pets go where we go.
But being a pet parent also means being prepared. Our weather can be a bit… unpredictable. We’ve got freezing winters where paws need protection and humid summers where heatstroke is a real risk. Being a "Parent" means looking out for those things.
At Cook Insurance Group, we’re part of this community. We know the local vets, we know the local parks, and we know that your pets are a huge part of what makes your house a home. When you call us to talk about pet insurance, you’re talking to people who get it. We’ll probably ask to see a picture of your pet before we even get to the quote!
How to Celebrate National Pet Parents Day (April 26th)
Since the big day is just a few weeks away, I thought I’d share a few ways you can celebrate the special bond you have with your furry family members:
- Extra Cuddle Time: Life is busy, but your pet doesn’t ask for much: just some of your time. Set aside an extra 20 minutes for some undivided attention.
- The "Good" Treats: Head down to a local pet bakery or pet store and grab something special. Maybe a new squeaky toy that will drive you crazy for ten minutes but make them the happiest dog on the block.
- An Ohio Adventure: Take a small road trip. Whether it's a new trail or just a drive with the windows down (for the dogs, obviously), a change of scenery is a great gift.
- A Health Check: It might not sound like a "gift," but keeping them healthy is the best way to show you care. If they’re due for a checkup, get it scheduled.
- Share the Love: Post a photo on social media! We love seeing your pets. Tag us or send us a photo: it honestly makes our day in the office.
We’re Here for Your Whole Family
At the end of the day, insurance is about people. It’s about making sure that when life throws a curveball, you have a catcher’s mit ready.
Whether it's your car, your home, your life, or your cat’s unexpected surgery, Cook Insurance Group is here to help you navigate it all with a casual, personal touch. We’re not a giant, faceless corporation. We’re Rodney and the team, and we’re your neighbors.
So, as we head toward Pet Parents Day, give your dog a scratch behind the ears or your cat a little extra catnip for me. And if you want to make sure they’re covered for whatever life brings their way, give us a shout. We’d love to help you protect your whole family.
